God Walks Backwards

Isten hátrafelé megy
Director: Miklós Jancsó

Hungary, 1991, drama, 95 min., hungarian with english and lithuanian subtitles,N-13

"It is possible that this time it is going to be a more direct story. But we, as Gyula Hernádi my scriptwriter and creator-companion says - we always make pseudo-history. Our films have always used the language of metaphors. When "The Round-Up" was sent to Cannes, "Népszabadság" - a daily paper in Hungary - published an interview with me, just to make it possible for the film to go to the Cannes festival. In the interview I was supposed to emphasize that I was not talking about so-called socialism. Perhaps today I do not need to find excuses and make explanation any more. I hope that the irony of my film will be understandable for everybody. A sense of humour on the side of the audience will be very much needed though, since the story is about the Russians coming back to Hungary and killing everyone."
