The film enters the lives of three women living on the same floor of a Lisbon apartment building. Aurora (Laura Soveral) is a temperamental and eccentric old woman, who escapes to the casino whenever she has any money on her, has hangovers from anti-depressants and suspects her maid Santa (Isabel Cardoso) is practising voodoo against her. Their neighbour Pilar (Teresa Madruga) spends her first years of retirement trying to straighten the world, dealing with other people’s guilt and is devoted to social causes. When Aurora dies, the other two learn of an episode from her past: a tale of love and crime set in an Africa at the foothill of Mount Tabu. Directed by portuguese new directing star Miguel Gomes, “Tabu” is a lyrical, metaphorical drama on colonialism with a bold structure that defies genre specifics and breaks narrative rules. Awarded for artistic inovation at the Berlin International Film Festival, the film is an exquisite visual and cinematic experience.
2012 – Alfred Bauer Award and FIPRESCI Prize at the Berlin International Film Festival (Germany).
2012 – Silver Lady Harimaguada Award and Audience Award at the Las Palmas International Film Festival (Gran Canaria, Spain).
