Don't Think

Don't Think
Director: Adam Smith

United Kingdom, Music documentary, 2011, 85 min., without dialogues

Filmed with 20 cameras at a headline show at Japan’s very own Glastonbury – Fuji Rock Festival – “Don't Thinkˮ is the first time the full “Chemical Brothers” live experience has been captured on film. Directed by long-term visuals collaborator Adam Smith this full-length concert movie places cameras in the centre of the stage as well as at the very heart of the crowd to perfectly capture a fan's eye view of the heightened emotional reactions of the audience. Over the course of the film, we are taken on a journey as it undergoes a transformation from concert film to fully immersive document of one of the most mind-bendingly psychedelic live shows ever seen. Above you, lights swoop and strafe across armies of marching toy robots and galloping deconstructed horses; paint balls explode in front of borderline psychotic clowns. Stunned by the jaw-dropping intensity of what they’re witnessing, just one thought flashes through viewers‘ minds: “Don’t think. Just let it flow.” This breathtaking film became a hit all over the world with raves erupting at cinema screenings.

About the director:

Adam Smith, British director and visual artist, studied film and video at London College of Printing (United Kingdom) before co-founding the visuals company “Vegetable Vision” and launching himself into designing visual shows and installations for bands, clubs and raves. His career path has taken him from making club and concert visuals via documentaries and critically acclaimed television dramas “Skinsˮ, “Little Dorritˮ and “Doctor Whoˮ to award-winning music videos for “The Streetsˮ, “The Chemical Brothersˮ and others. He has worked with “The Chemical Brothersˮ since their first gig back in 1994, producing ever more elaborate visuals, which have provided backdrops for their shows worldwide. This long-term collaboration prompted the press to hail him as the “the third Chemical Brother”. After 18 years of working on “The Chemical Brothersˮ live show he finally captured it on film. “Don't Thinkˮ reveals, what it is like to experience the show from right in the middle of the crowd and how the music and visuals emotionally affect the audience.
