Nader and Simin are a married couple living in troubled Iran. Simin thinks that their daughter Termeh will have wider opportunities in life if they leave the country, but Nader objects – he has to take care of his father, who suffers from Alzheimer’s. The woman asks for a divorce... The dilemma between responsibility to a parent and love for a child shatters the family’s peaceful being. A Separation comes to the Kaunas International Film Festival from the Berlin International Film Festival, where it became the first ever Iranian film to win the Golden Bear and the first ever movie to receive three Bears at once. It is a story about choices and the eternal human virtues – love, responsibility and sacrifice; told in a realistic yet tender style.

About the director:

Film director Asghar Farhadi was born in Iran, in 1972. After finishing Theatre Studies at Tehran University, he found his calling – cinema. Worldwide appreciation finally came with his third movie “About Elly” (2009), for which he was awarded Best Director at the Berlin International Film Festival. Asghar Farhadi’s films strongly represent humanism and have a deep sense of virtues. They also tell especially true Iranian life stories and raise intimate dilemmas.
