The White Stripes: Under Great White Northern Lights
Director: Emmett Malloy

USA, documentary, 93 min., 2009, lithuanian subtitles
The musical documentary “The White Stripes: Under Great White Northern Lights” records the band’s tour across Canada in 2007. Celebrating the 10th anniversary of “The White Stripes”, the band’s duo Jack and Meg travelled through every province and territory of Canada. In this visually stirring and emotional documentary feature we see one of the world’s most famous bands playing in towns of all sizes – from traditional shows in crowded concert halls to improvised gigs at unusual locations such as a bowling alley, a boat or a city bus. Director Emmett Malloy managed to capture not only the tour: live shows, intimate backstage moments, interviews with band members Jack and Meg, and their adventurous journey. The film also reveals the special relationship of the enigmatic duo and gives a subtle hint on the personality of the silent and introvert Meg White. This documentary is a must-see for all those who already love the band and for those who want to know it better.
The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2009, and the live album of “The White Stripes” recorded during the tour was released this spring.

About the director:
Emmett Malloy was born in Los Angeles, California. Together with his brother Brendan Malloy (both known as The Malloys) they have directed videos for bands such as “The White Stripes”, “Metallica”, “The Raconteurs” and many others. In 1998, he founded his own film company “Woodshed Films”, specialising in films depicting the surfing lifestyle and culture: Emmett Malloy co-directed a documentary “Thicker Than Water” and appeared in it as a surfer in 2000. As true to music as he is to film, he is also a co-founder of “Brushfire Records” record company along with the musician Jack Johnson. “The White Stripes: Under Great White Northern Lights” is the director’s first solo film, merging together two of his passions – music and cinema.
