Romania, drama, 96 min., 2009, lithuanian and english subtitles
Francesca (Monica Barladeanu) is a young kindergarten teacher whose dream is to leave Bucharest and emigrate to Italy, where she wants to open a nursery for the children of Romanian immigrants. The woman is ready to face any obstacles, the most important of which are the doubts of those people close to her. Francesca’s family’s and friends’ stories about how Romanian immigrant workers are treated in Italy make her less and less optimistic about her future there. Nevertheless she plans to migrate with her boyfriend Mita (Doru Boguta), expecting him to join her in Italy as soon as he finishes a small business he’s involved in here, in Romania. However, things turn unexpectedly. “Francesca” ignited strong reactions in Italy and was banned at the request of Alessandra Mussolini, the granddaughter of the dictator Benito Mussolini, for its keen dialogues which mention the names of Italian political figures (the ban was soon lifted after a court decision). It is a film seeking to reveal the existing tension between Italians and Romanians. It is Bobby Paunescu’s attempt to speak about the need for a change.

2009 – FIPRESCI (The International Federation of Film Critics) Prize for the Best Film in the Gijón International Film Festival (Spain).
2010 – Best International First Feature in East End Film Festival (Great Britain).
