Exit Through the Gift Shop

Exit Through the Gift Shop
Director: Banksy

USA, UK, documentary, 86 min., 2010, lithuanian subtitles
Banksy is a graffiti artist with a global reputation whose work can be seen on walls from post-hurricane New Orleans to the separation barrier on the Palestinian West Bank, and his black-and-white images of kissing policemen and rioters throwing flowers are now popular icons. Fiercely guarding his anonymity to avoid prosecution, Banksy has so far resisted all attempts to be captured on film. “Exit Through the Gift Shop” is the first film directed by the street artist himself. It tells the incredible true story of how an eccentric documentary maker Thierry Guetta travelled the world documenting graffiti artists and their work. Finally, he attempted to locate, befriend, and film Banksy, but things take a sudden turn: the mysterious street artist takes the camera and becomes the director, and the former director transforms into an artist - and the subject of the film... As Banksy describes it, “It’s basically the story of how one man set out to film the un-filmable. And failed.” The film crosses the boundaries of usual documentary. It contains exclusive footage of Banksy, Shepard Fairey, Space Invader and many of the world’s most infamous graffiti artists at work, on walls and in interview and reveals thrilling and adventurous world of the street art.

About the director:
Banksy is the pseudonym of a British graffiti artist, political activist and painter, whose identity is unconfirmed. Supposedly, he was born in 1974 in Bristol, England. Banksy began his career as a graffiti artist in Bristol where he was a member of DryBreadZ Crew from 1992 to 1994. He creates free-hand and stencil graffiti, sculptures and other artistic objects. His satirical works reflecting political and social issues have been featured on streets, walls and bridges of cities throughout the world as well as in museums. Some treat his controversial works as vandalism and paint them over, while others buy his artworks in auctions. One way or another, he is still the most famous street artist in the world. In 2001–2005, Banksy has self-published several books containing photographs of his works, many of them now destroyed, complemented by his own writings. The documentary film “Exit Through the Gift Shop” is his directorial debut and his first appearance on screen.
