Crime and Punishment

Zbrodnia i kara
Director: Piotr Dumała

Poland, short film, 34 min., 2000
A screen adaptation of one of Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s most famous novels. The director shows the very complex relationships between the many film characters, and develops a variety of topics. In the film the director uses the quick installation of cutting, the first multiples and backgrounds, and develops a three-dimensional perspective with pictures. It is a silent film, but the obscure inner worlds of the characters are counterbalanced with music that reveals all the answers.

2000 – Honourable Mention at the DOK, International Leipzig festival for Documentary and Animated film, Germany.
2000 – Craft prize for the best design at the Ottawa International Animation Festival, Canada.
2000 – Golden Dash Award in the National Festival of Animated Film in Krakow, Poland.
2002 – Special Recognition in the Zagreb World Festival of Animated Films, Croatia.
