A Gentle One

Director: Piotr Dumała

Poland, short film, 12 min., 1985
This unusual interpretation of Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s short story reveals studies in jealousy, love, alienation and hatred between two humans: a young woman and an elderly man. It is Piotr Dumala’s first psychological film. The visual appearance of the film is enhanced by the painting technique (plasterboard) and the piercing music composed by Zygmunt Konieczny, accompanying the reflections of the characters’ past. The film was nominated for the Palm d’Or in the 1986 Cannes Film Festival.
