Revisiting Solaris

Aplankant Soliarį
Director: Deimantas Narkevičius

Lithuania, Germany, videofilm, 19 min., 2007
In the short film Donatas Banionis, a leading actor in Andrei Tarkovsky’s famous film “Solaris” (1972), appears once more in his role as the astronaut Kris Kelvin more than 40 years after Tarkovsky's “Solaris” was made. Tarkovsky’s film was based on Stanisław Lem’s futuristic novel of the same name, excluding its last chapter. “Revisiting Solaris” is based on that last chapter of the novel, and it tells how Kris Kelvin reflects on his visit to Solaris shortly before his return from the space mission. Narkevičius combines the shots of the protagonist with the photographs by Lithuanian symbolist painter and composer Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis taken on the coast of the Black Sea in 1905, visualising the cosmic landscapes of the Solaris. Tarkovsky also filmed the surface of the Black Sea to represent the ocean of the mysterious planet.
