This October, Kaunas International Film Festival will screen Pedro Almodóvar's latest film Broken Embraces (Los abrazos rotos, 2009, Spain) starring the pearl of Spanish cinema Penélope Cruz. The premiere of the film will be screened in “Romuva“ theatre in Kaunas and “Pasaka“ theatre in Vilnius, and will definitely find its way into the hearts of Lithuanian viewers.

Great success was forecasted for the film even before its premiere on the big screen, while the charming Penélope Cruz openly shared her impressions about her work with the filmmaker: “Pedro is a very important man for my career as well as my personal life. If I had to choose one director to work with for the rest of my life, it would definitely be Pedro!” said the actress.

The jury of the Cannes Film Festival could not resist the tandem of the renowned filmmaker and the talented actress and included the film in this year’s competition programme.

“The director elegantly plays with our memory, but first of all this film is a gift to Almodóvar’s new muse Penélope Cruz. She plays a talentless actress and does this with stunning skill. The filmmaker rethinks and flirts with film history using the scenes from the works of famous directors and even his own films. Do we have to say that the result is completely worth your attention?” asks Tomas Tengmark, producer of Kaunas International Film Festival’s programme.

Pedro Almodóvar’s 17th film tells a story of a blind filmmaker who has lost not only his sight but also the love of his life. This film is a complete disengagement from the canons of Spanish cinema. Here, the viewers will see everything: love, deceit, tears, as well as melodramatic and even comic scenes. It is a story that unites the past with the present. It is a colourful mosaic assembled of different points of view, interwoven stories and true drama. The film captures with its plot, flawless acting and subtle references to Almodóvar’s earlier works. Calculated and complete visual expression is perfectly complemented with the unique music score composed by Alberto Iglesias.

Broken Embraces shown in the Wide Angle section of the festival’s programme will be screened both in Kaunas and Vilnius.

Kaunas International Film Festival will take place in “Romuva” theatre, Kaunas, October 1-11, and in “Pasaka” theatre, Vilnius, October 12-18. Programme of the festival and information about the tickets will be announced shortly at www.kinofestivalis.lt.
