Bouzkachi: the Song of the Steppes

Bouzkachi, le chant des steppes
Director: Jacques Debs

France, Uzbekistanas, 2008, 90min., documentary, fairy tale
Ali and Oulougbey are both in love with the young Mohabat. Unable to choose between them, she decides that she will marry the winner of a bouzkachi contest in which a hundred horsemen will participate. A poet and a painter will therefore have to cross mountains and steppes to clash during an equestrian combat full of cries and dust. Who will win the heart of beautiful Mohabat?
“Bouzkachi: the Song of the Steppes” is a film at the edges of documentary because the characters are real (lithuanian artist Stasys Eidrigevičius plays one of the leading roles in the film). Hence, throughout the film, a storyteller recites a love poem by Hafiz, the great Persian poet, and adds a mystical dimension to the film.
