Recollection

Recollection
Director: Kamal Aljafari

Germany, 2015, documentary, 70 minutes, N-7

Recollection, the newest feature documentary from Palestinian director Kamal Aljafari, acts as an intertextual archive of a city, transporting its audience to streets, houses and squares that are no more. Kamal Aljafari was a little boy when his native city of Jaffa served as a backdrop for Delta Force (1986), the famed Hollywood blockbuster. Aljafari can be seen amongst the group of little children, waiting to catch a glimpse of Chuck Norris… Years later, after stumbling upon this film while flicking through TV channels, the director realised that this film has preserved his native city – now unrecognisably changed, destroyed, renovated and gentrified – as it once was. Having removed all the protagonists from the footage, Aljafari was left with the empty streets of the city. Recollection is a dream of a city that is no more and a future that cannot be returned to, featuring an extraordinary voyage across the memories of Jaffa.
