Dieste [Uruguay]

Dieste [Uruguay]
Director: Heinz Emigholz

Germany, 2017, documentary, 95 minutes, V

Dieste [Uruguay] is the final part of Heinz Emigholz’s “Streetscapes series. This film is a triptych, presenting 29 buildings designed by the master of Uruguyan architecture Eladio Dieste (1917 – 2000). Starting with three buildings from the 1930s designed by Julio Vilamajó in Montevideo which could have inspired Dieste himself, and concluding with Dieste‘s final works in Spain, Emigholz‘s gaze attentively explores the elegant curves of the architect‘s buildings. Revelling in the buoyant, graceful shell architecture that allows both air and light to pass through, the director also draws parallels to similar structures found in nature. The epilogue, set in Spain, presents the later buildings designed by the architect, that is, smaller-scale copies of his larger church buildings. Closed off and compact, they come across like caricatures, out of place and miles away from Uruguay. However, this does not dismantle Dieste‘s reputation: in fact, it only illustrates the importance of unique architecture to cities and their inhabitants. Dieste [Uruguay] is a unique architectural journey.
